About NCAs and BNG

NCAs are the 159 ecological landscape areas Natural England defined in the late 1990s, drawn on habitat, geology and land use rather than administration.

The statutory metric's spatial risk multiplier reads the NCA alongside the local planning authority (LPA), and either is enough on its own. Off-site units count in full where the bank shares the development's LPA or NCA; a neighbouring LPA or NCA pays three-quarters, and outside both pays half.

Landscapes and council boundaries rarely agree, so the NCA is often what saves a unit its full value. That is the case this directory is for: supply an LPA-only search would write off. Watercourse units are the exception, scored on waterbody and operational catchments instead.

Looking for a different cut? Browse by LPA for the other geography that prices distance, or browse by LNRS area for the strategies that set strategic significance. Or see every registered habitat bank in one list, whichever area it sits in.
